How did it all start?

It all started when Matthew Schiller decided to model himself for a class in 3D.

When Kevin Jackson got a hold of the model he entertained himself by panning around the character in Maya and pretending that the character was skating. A few minutes later this evolved into animating the camera to give the illusion of motion. Here are the first playblasts ever created with Skater Matt: "Journey Through Matt" and "Matt Flip."

Once he started introducing props to the scene animating the camera didn’t work so well. Kevin didn’t like it one bit but he didn’t have a choice--he had to start animating the character. As he soon found out realistic, exciting motion was very possible when animating the geometry by itself.

Matt and Kevin joined forces like two polygons caught up in a Boolean union, and the rest is history.
